Very talented Evanescence have released their latest album titled Anywhere But Home and Wow! It's really a good one.

It's a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I'm more than happy to announce that's exactly what I must say about this one. There simply isn't a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all.

Anywhere But Home is a nicely varied, mix of 14 tracks that are very well written and brilliantly performed songs by these clearly superb musicians. Most of the songs display a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Seemingly drawing from what I can only imagine are their own personal experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions of love, heartbreak, pain, failed relationships and unattainable romance. They're all here.

I'm of the opinion that Anywhere But Home is certainly some of this groups best work in a few years. A totally enjoyable CD and an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up because it's a collection that even the casual Rock fan can appreciate and enjoy.

While the entire CD is outstanding the truly standout tunes are track 3 - Taking Over Me, track 6 - My Last Breath, and track 11 - Bring Me To Life.

My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 7 - Farther Away. Outstanding!

Have you ever had the hots for a Jewish girl? Has a Jewish boy ever had the hots for you? Have you ever wondered, who were these people? Were they like you or me or were they different? The movie, When Do We Eat? answers these questions and more.

Written by Nina Davidovich and Salvador Litvak and directed by Litvak, When Do We Eat? was released for distribution in 2005. It went nowhere, at least nowhere near us until a Netflix recommendation caused Martha to order the movie for my birthday. It was my best present in years.

Now, I can't recommend this movie for everyone because not everyone likes everyone else's recommendations. But this is a review, not a recommendation, and my review, my personal take on When Do We Eat? is that When Do We Eat? is a work of art, if not mad genius.

Some will not like this movie. While it made me laugh, it may make others uncomfortable. Because this movie definitely finds its center out on the edge, I realize that because many prefer to stay close to the center, they will have a different reaction to this little film with a big heart.

Maybe the Cleaver family actually existed outside the sound stages of Hollywood. Maybe a writer didn't make them up, an idealized family of goyim where the father was, well, so much like a father and the mother, so much like a mother, and the kids although they had their travails, were not a disappointment to those that reared them.

But somehow, I don't think so. Somehow I think families are more like the Stuckmans in When Do We Eat? Like the Seder dinner around which the movie is set, When Do We Eat? is a fable, a fable of familial redemption, perhaps the rarest of all events, even in the movies of Hollywood.

As believable as Blades of Glory and its parent inspiration, Dodgeball, When Do We Eat? takes us on a journey where competition, this time familial (a reality with which many are familiar) plays a central role. Religion and piety and ecstasy and desire all play a role in a drama that is as universally appealing as the clothes Ralph Lipschitz designs as Ralph Lauren.

Mr. Simmons has called for rappers and those who produce and promote rap music, to voluntarily eradicate three offensive words, which appear to be staples of the typical rap song. One is left to wonder, what would the average rap song be without the gratuitous use of bitches, hos or niggas? I applaud Mr. Simmons, who while staunchly opposing censorship has adopted this new stance, or as the late James Brown might say, "poppa's got a brand new bag." What I take particular exception to, is his calling all rap art, when much of it is not. There is no redeeming social value in derogatory lyrics or the negative imagery that has come to characterize the vast majority of rap songs and videos. The Encarta World English Dictionary describes art as follows:

1) the creation of beautiful or thought provoking works, for example, in painting, music or writing.

2) beautiful or thought-provoking works produced through creative activity… Show me the beauty in misogyny. Show me the beauty in demeaning derogatory language.

Our nation's youth spend millions on rap music, that thinking people wouldn't give 50 cent for. They buy music that very often promotes a negative anti-social lifestyle that at best is deviant. The lifestyles that we see rappers promoting has little basis in the broader reality. If the thugs and the gangstas were truly in charge, our urban communities would rapidly cease to exist. Gangsta rappers glamorize a negative lifestyle; a lifestyle I might add, that they have gladly chosen to abandoned. Instead, they have opted to talk about certain aspects of their past lives, real or imagined. The music and the imagery presents the world with a distorted picture of what urban life is like. Thugs with recording contracts do not artist make. They are hustlers who would, and do, sell their souls for a recording contract. The multi conglomerates that run the music business are more than willing to promote the filth that they have labeled art, as long as it remains commercially viable. Prison culture, i.e., hip-hop culture inspires the poo poo pants look that many of today's youth wear. Their pants are so far down as to make walking difficult. We don't have to imagine, boxer or briefs, we can see which ones they're wearing.

Hip-hop and rap deservingly take most of the rap for glamorizing lifestyles of the uninformed and ignorant, but society at large is equally at fault. As a society we worship at the temple of the dollar bill. No one gives one hoot about how that dollar was made. Perhaps rapper Method Man put it best when he said, "Dollar bill y'all, dollar bill y'all dollar dollar dollar dollar bill y'all." Success is determined by what you have, not who you are. From the gold and platinum chains to the gold and platinum teeth mindless materialism and ostentation are the accepted norm. Fancy cars, expensive clothes and homes that are unsupportable over time are the acquisitions of choice for most rappers. Given this litany, why do they call it art?

Well not exactly, but Citizen Cupcake is delighted to welcome back former Virgin associate Jessie Eschman not to Virgin-proper, but instead to our stage for live music night on Wednesday 12/20.

Jessica Eschman is a singer-songwriter-pianist with a diverse body of original songs. Jessie's lyrics are introspective and emotionally driven, yet she continues to maintain her sense of humor. A singer, first and foremost, she is known for her soulful delivery of the words she writes. Jessie is influenced by artists from a wide variety of musical styles (Jill Scott, Tori Amos, Rufus Wainwright, Ani Difranco, Fiona Apple, the list goes on and on...) and is always armed with a suprising cover or two. Jessie loves to play and sing, and thanks YOU for listening. And she invites special guest Bob Tiews to the stage to round out her show. Cheers to the both of them! Come by for the show!

Seasonal sensations on the Citizen Cake Savory menu!

If you haven't been to our restaurant lately~you don't know what you've been missing. Let me tell you how GREAT my most recent visit was:

I was torn between so many starters that I couldn't decide: so one of my dining partners and I decided to pretty much order the whole list and make a meal of those. What a great idea. There were light, refreshing dishes that just amazed and delighted us: Frisee-apricot salad with pistachio and fromage blanc; romaine & radicchio with avocado and radish; hamachi sashimi with melon; heirloom salad (YAY tomato season!) with feta and basil; and an interesting and yummy pea shoot saute with cippolini and mint. Everything was balanced to perfection and a textural delight.

However: the entrees were not to be ignored...I was lucky enough to try my other friend's braised short rib dish with slaw and peanuts in a tamarind glaze--wow I could have had that for dessert...

And then there was dessert: Berry Items, stone fruit sautes and the must-have s'moore brownie.

Too much of everything was just enough! Can't wait to go back!

A Sweet Anniversary!...

Citizen Cupcake Cafe + Bar is celebrating our 2 year anniversary today. We've been selling a lot of cupcakes these last two years, but there's so much more that makes up the icing on THAT cake: great candy and chocolate assortment that adorns our shelves, live music (every Wednesday night!), new featured Artists, awesome Soju cocktails...and then some.

Andrea, the manager of Cupcake, would like to give a nod to our 2 veteran staff members at the Cafe: Cybelle Jacobs and Nick Venegoni. These two rockstars have been with us since the begining and have really contributed to what Cupcake has grown into in these last 2 years. I'm fortunate to work with such dedicated people!

The staff at Citizen Cupcake also celebrates our boss, Elizabeth Falkner, and amazing team of talented chefs that provide us with our delectables--after all, we wouldn't be the favorite downtown sweet-spot without all the goods from the kitchen at the mothership.

Lunch patrons! We celebrate the arrival of a new panini at Citizen Cupcake! Our latest delicious addition to the menu is the 'Pavo Rico'. [pavo means turkey breast in Spanish] What a burst of flavor in this sandwich. Our chefs pile smoked turkey and fresh mozzarella on our housemade focaccia bread and then complete with an array of flavor accents: pickled pimento, cilantro-lime aioli and mole butter. It's original and it's fabulous.

Cutting-Edge Dinnertime Delights at the restaurant...

On my most recent visit to Citizen Cake I felt blessed to indulge in a few new dishes:

'Best new starter' for me was the ceviche, lovingly layered with mango, rich avocado puree and micro greens. Almost as good as dessert!

For an entree, what a treat to try the Chef's paella. It was filling and comforting, indeed; I never knew how much I like halibut cheeks.

And for dessert, we took a stroll down 'bourbon street', which was sweet potato pudding topped with streusel and served with sage brown butter ice cream. Delish!

Original! Acoustic! Rock! Meet Dan Newitt...

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Dan Newitt has been pursing music from a very early age. He started writing songs at age 14 when he picked up the guitar for the first time. From the punk clubs of Chicago to the cathedrals of Europe, to the coffeehouses of California, Dan has dedicated himself to studying and performing in a wide variety of musical styles and traditions. Dan has been living and performing in the Bay Area since 1994. His current repertoire of original music pulls together influences of rock, folk, jazz, soul, blues, bluegrass and modern contemporary music, with a few tuneful hooks thrown in that leave you humming his songs for days after you hear them. The imagery and poetry of Dan's lyrics display an emotional depth that sets his music apart. In addition to his solo performances, Dan has performed with bands such as IBMA Showcase band StrungOver, and the bluegrass outfit The Smokin' Hams, which the San Francisco Chronicle has called the best bluegrass band on the peninsula, and can also be seen performing with his improvisational acoustic-rock sextet, Pathetic Honey.

We welcome The Neurohumors for a *trip* back to our stage on Wednesday, March 29th.

The Neurohumors are a constantly re-arranged combination of San Francisco-based musicians that specialize in largely improvisational rock, jazz, progressive and ambient styles. Employing open-ended 'launch pads', the band is known for journeying through a variety of moods and genres within a single, contiguous piece of music. Jams may exceed 25 minutes, during the course of which trance-like modes and mellow psychedelia give forth to polyrhythmic climaxes, danceable grooves and/or sophisticated jazz punctuations. New or accidental audience members find themselves appreciating the ride despite what they might usually look for in music; veteran Neurohumors fans know that the ever-changing line-up means something new every time.

This time we will hang with: Ryan on keyboards, Brian on bass, David Jayne on drums & synth, and Lance Case, a guitarist who is quite easy on the ears...

He brings to us for our tasting pleasure: a variety of Scharffen Berger chocolates, a few new nibbles from E. On March 10, our Executive Chef and proprietor Elizabeth will attend the Grand Dessert and Savory Tasting at the prestigious James Beard House in New York City. On that eve, let's all toast to their noble, and delectable mission: To celebrate, preserve, and nurture America's culinary heritage and diversity in order to elevate the appreciation of our culinary excellence.

The Food Network's latest dessert-feature-show is called Sugar Rush, which Elizabeth appeared on for the pilot episode. Host Warren Brown is in need of some new inspiration, so of course they are coming back to the source. The shoot will take place during the 3rd week of March at Citizen Cake at Grove and Gough. And stay tuned to the Food Network for this new episode as well as Elizabeth's next appearance on Iron Chef America--we'll let you know the air-date as soon as we can!

The public is invited to Union Square to see Australia’s new global campaign and experience Little Australia, the city’s continent/island of Australia. Event will have free food, contests with grand prize trips to Australia and chances to learn more about Australia. America’s BIGGEST PAVLOVA will be baked by Elizabeth Falkner of Bay Area bakery Citizen Cake and handed out to people in the square attending the celebration.

Festival entertainment will include: didgerdoo playing and aboriginal performances by DESCENDANCE. There will be a 'best Aussie accent' contest!

This week at Citizen Cupcake we present Jeanie & Chuck's Country Roundup to entertain on Wednesday night! Jeanie and Chuck's Country Roundup performs an entertaining mix of honky tonk and bluegrass music on acoustic instruments. In front of one big mic, they entertain the audience through music, humor, and showmanship. They specialize in country duets and honky tonk songs, with strong vocals that highlight the rich emotion of classic country music. Be it the duets of George and Tammy or Carter and Ralph, they play country classics with humor and respect.

Jeanie and Chuck's Country Roundup performs at festivals, cafes, nightclubs and other music venues around the San Francisco Bay Area. They've played at the San Francisco Bluegrass and Old Time Festival, Strictly Bluegrass 2 in Golden Gate Park, and live on the radio on KALW's Bluegrass Signal, KPFA's Panhandle Country, and KKUP's Cupertino Barndance.

We are delighted to welcome them to our stage on Wednesday December 28 at 7pm. Families are welcome for music night, and as always there is no cover. Come on down!

Citizen Cupcake, as well as the Virgin Megastore Staff, is delighted to welcome Jessica Eschman to perform on Wednesday, December 7th for Live Music Night. Friends new and old look forward to gathering 'round the stage for Jessica's solo performance. She comes to us as a former Virgin associate, and is no stranger to the music scene here in the Bay Area. Jessica Eschman is a singer-songwriter-pianist with a diverse body of original songs. Jessie's lyrics are introspective and emotionally driven, yet she continues to maintain her sense of humor. A singer, first and foremost, she is known for her soulful delivery of the words she writes. Jessie is influenced by artists from a wide variety of musical styles (Jill Scott, Tori Amos, Rufus Wainwright, Ani Difranco, Fiona Apple, the list goes on and on...) and is always armed with a suprising cover or two. Jessie loves to play and sing, and thanks YOU for listening.

With a traditional acoustic guitar spin, Tom O'Connor lends an original interpretation to many rock and folk classics and obscurities, peppered with a few original compositions. With his influences ranging from blues, classic rock, and folk, Tommy O. has lit up many a late-night campfire jam with anthemic sing-able tunes. It is in that spirit that Tom takes the mic for a solo acoustic night of fun.

Fontain's M.U.S.E. will be Citizen Cupcake's next live music experience. And it certainly will be an experience! This unique ensemble has entertained audiences throughout the bay area with their blend of Improvisation, Alternative and Eastern styles since 1996. Fontain’s M.U.S.E. is most famous for their performances with the Magique Bazaar, and have been appearing in many theatrical venues and concerts. Monthly shows at the Historic Gas Lighter Theater have made Fontain’s M.U.S.E. many friends and fans. You will hear: 'Rocken Raga, Sensuous Dance Grooves, and spicy vocals in many Tongues; English, Persian, Hindi, French and Spanish; sitars, guitars, electronic grooves, percussion...' Showtime 7pm. Also on Wednesday, November 9, Citizen Cupcake Cafe + Bar is excited to present this week's act for music night, Doni Harvey. He just returned to the Bay Area from a greatly successful solo blues tour in Germany. Doni’s music was well received and inspired rave reviews for his contemporary style of the Blues. Doni Harvey is the kind of musician who mesmerizes the audience with the first notes he plays. This is partially due to his extensive stage experience with acts like Automatic Man, Stomu Yamashta, Caribbean Allstars, HARVEY, Clarence Clemons, Laverne Baker and Narada Michael Walden, to name a few. But his solo performances have still an added quality: in a small, intimate setting, the authenticity of his blues becomes a near physical experience. On his solo CDs 'Your Blues Ain't like My Blues' and 'Doni Harvey 'Live' .....telling', Doni Harvey tells stories, not just reflecting his personal experiences, but stories everyone in the audience can relate to.

How about some Jam with that mini-scone? Introducing Next Week's Featured Musical Act

On Wednesday October 12, Citizen Cupcake's Live Music Night will feature the psychedelic-influenced, abstract jams of The Neurohumors. The Neurohumors are a constantly re-arranged combination of San Francisco-based musicians that specialize in purely improvisational rock, jazz, progressive and ambient styles. The band is known for its unpredictable and wild jams that transport listeners to all-new distant places. The Neurohumors rarely play songs, but rather they employ 'launch pads' to project the music far into unknown, uncharted territory. Some jams are upwards of 25 minutes, during the course of which trance-like modes and mellow psychedelia give forth to explosive and incendiary events. The experience of their performance is often a lot like space travel and time travel together with a birds-eye view of galactic oddities and fantastic worlds. With an ever-changing lineup, you never know what to expect from The Neurohumors, making theirs an exciting and must-see performance every time.

Happy as a... Clam!

AAahhhh, the sweet taste of success. In partnership with Cat Cora behind the Iron Chef America stoves, our Elizabeth Falkner helped simmer, sauce and saute their way to sweet victory in 'Battle Clam' on Sunday, August 14th. Some of the notorious creative courses were: 'clammy mary'-- bloody mary sorbet and avocado mousse served with clam kabobs; 'shakin' like an Elvis clambake'-- Southern favorite with corn, potatoes and szechwan-peppercorn-butter; and a trio of clam, just in case you haven't sampled it enough ways--clam ceviche, pineapple-curry clam and clam pakora. Jjust a bit more complicated and creative than one would whip up at home. Congratulations ladies!
